Deltacanine.net is a website dedicated to the dog lifestyle. Everything from dog training to the weird quirks of having dogs as a companion is fair game.
My name is Case and I love working with dogs and having them around. My wife and I have a houseful of critters including our cute baby girl, Copper the Golden Retriever, Scout the Dutch Shepherd, and Mr. Marms the polydactyl cat. Things can get pretty crazy at times with dogs chasing each other around, the cat meowing, and the baby screeching like a pterodactyl, but at the end of the day it’s all worth it.
My favorite training is protection work with Scout but to be proficient in it, you must have an obedient dog. Obedience is the foundation from which all training stems. If you have obedience, there is no limit to what you can do with your dog. As Mike “The Dogman” Mcconnery says, “if the handler is capable, the dog is able.” Obedience is trained though stability under stress. Dogs are put into obedience on elevated positions, in close proximity to each other, and a combination of the two. If the dog learns to maintain obedience in these stressful situations, it should have no problem in normal every day life.
Treats and rewards aren’t used in training. Only praise when the dog does well, and correction commiserate with the infraction when he makes a mistake. Open and honest communication is what brings a man and dog together to achieve wondrous things.
